The Hot Tub Buyer’s Guide for 2026

Everything you need to know before buying a hot tub in France from the experts at Hot Tubs in France.

Buying a hot tub is a big decision, and if you’re an expat in France and/or your French language skills are coming along but not quite there, it can add an extra layer of complexity to the whole buying process. Everyone has common questions – how much maintenance is involved? What size is best for your home or holiday rental? How much does it actually cost to run in France? Is a wood-fired hot tub really that much cheaper than an electric hot tub?
Here at Hot Tubs in France, we’re always happy to share our expertise. We help expats buy with confidence — in clear English, with no surprises. In fact, we sell most of our hot tubs through referrals; we make people happy, and so they’re so glad to share us with their friends and family.

Hot Tubs in France

Hot Tubs in France are based in France— and that matters. You need to ensure that whatever hot tub you buy is right for French conditions. A cheap hot tub on eBay might seem like a good idea, but it can be a problem, not least with delivery, installation, and warranties. We are there to help you right from the very start, with guidance on access and planning considerations; and we do all deliveries, installations and give ongoing support.
Our hot tubs have fibreglass liners (durable and easy to clean); thermowood exteriors weather-resistant); stainless steel stoves (high efficiency); and high-quality insulation, including insulated lids

Wood-fired versus electric

These days, when electricity costs are soaring, wood-fired hot tubs are becoming more and more popular. You can use pretty much any wood to heat a hot tub, including wood cuttings from the garden, which keeps running costs very low. The only electricity that our hot tubs use is from the push-button controlled massage jets and the lights.
But it’s not just about the cost; there’s something special about the smell of real wood, and the aesthetics of a hot tub really add to an authentic spa experience. They work reliably in rural locations and have exceptional performance year-round, plus they look great and fit in perfectly with the French outdoor lifestyle.

Installing a wood-fired hot tub

You can pretty much install one anywhere. You need a flat surface; gravel is fine. There’s no plumbing – you can fill via a hose pipe. You do need an electrical supply if using the lights/bubble jets. We deliver and install all over France, and we always recommend you check with us first about where you want to place your hot tub to make sure it can be done. There are times when we’ll need to use specialist equipment or have an extra pair of hands to help, but we’ve never had a situation when we couldn’t make a customer happy yet!

Maintaining your wood-fired hot tub

“This is going to be a short paragraph – there’s not a lot to do.
The water needs to be changed regularly, as with any hot tub – how often depends on what you treat the water with. Chlorine products last longer, but more and more owners are choosing a non-chlorine treatment, which doesn’t last as long but means you can use the water in the garden. You’ll need to empty the ash out of the stove, and if you use wood from the garden, you might need to sweep the chimney (you can just lift it off and poke a chimney sweep brush inside).
